Origin Acupuncture is the oldest acupunture system, which is develped more than 2000 years ago in China. The first comprehensive textbook is “The yellow emperor’s canon”. It is <<The yellow emperor’s canon>>, Huangdi Neijing (simplified Chinese: 黄帝内经; traditional Chinese: 黃帝內經; pinyin: Huángdì Nèijīng), literally the Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor or Esoteric Scripture of the Yellow Emperor.
Origin acupuncture had been started much earlier than 2000 years ago, it said that was about 5000 years ago.
Why Origin Acupuncture is so unique?
Comparing modern acupuncture, which is more depends on neuro system, origin acupuncture has its only system, called meridians system, which runs on our body, including 20 meridian. Some times we call origin acupuncture as 5 element acupuncture, or De Qi acupuncture, or sensation acupuncture.
The meridians are broken down into two categories: the jingmai and the luomai. The jingmai represents most of what people often know as the meridians. The luomai are the various connections between different jingmai meridians.
The Meridian System also follows the Five Elements theory, in which different qualities, both physical and symbolic, are grouped within five categories. Each element has a range of qualities that are used to diagnose disease and dysfunction. They also provide prognostic tools to help the body regain balance and health. While there is no scientific basis in the Five Elements theory, it is important to understand the theory for the practice of acupuncture. Five Elements are; wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.
The relationship of these Five Elements
The relationship of these Five Elements are: delivery, controling and counteract. delivery can be understood as a “mother-daughter” relationship, where one element promotes or generates the next. For example, Wood makes Fire, and Fire burns things into ash (Earth). Therefore, Wood is the mother of Fire, while Earth is the child of Fire. Controlling can be understood as a “dominant-submissive” relationship, where one element restricts or properly controls another. For example, Fire controls Metal by melting it, and Metal restricts Wood by being able to cut it down (ie: You chop wood with a metal axe).
Counteract between 5 elements:
- one element becomes too powerful and, in turn, excessively restrains the element that it normally controls. For example, if Wood is too powerful, it will excessively restrain Earth; if Water is too strong, it will over control Fire.
- one element becomes weak and provides the element normally controlling it a chance to excessively restrain it. For example, if Earth becomes weak, it will be excessively restrained by Wood; if Water is weak, it will be excessively restrained by Earth.
- one element becomes very powerful and turns to control the element that it is normally inferior to. For instance, if Wood becomes too powerful, it will reversely restrain Metal, if Fire becomes too strong, it will reversely restrain Water.
- one element becomes weak and is restrained by the one it is superior to. For example, if Metal becomes weak, it will be reversely controlled by Wood; if Earth is weak, it will be reversely restrained by Water.
Meridians
Some organs are also part of the Principal Meridians, which are the twelve “standard” meridians. These are the meridians people are most familiar with. Some of these meridians correspond with a specific major organ. All the Principal Meridians run through a peripheral limb–either a hand or a foot. From there, each channel travels either up or down the body.
The twelve “standard” meridians: hand Tai Yin Lung, hand Yang Ming large intestin, foot Yang ming stomack, foot Tai Yin spleen, and so on.
Additionally, there are also eight Extraordinary Meridians which are thought to hold energy and do not directly correspond with any organs. Three of these are commonly used acupuncture points.
As part of a larger system, meridians bridge the gap between the tangible body and the Qi, or energy. TCM sees this dynamic as one of the main factors controlling well-being. Through the use of various practices, including acupuncture, Tuina massage, exercise, diet, herbal remedies, and Qigong (a health practice of body postures, breathing, and meditation), this vital energy system is controlled to promote health.
