Treating Tennis Elbow With Acupuncture Safely

That sharp pain on the outside of the elbow can make ordinary tasks feel unexpectedly difficult. Lifting a kettle, shaking hands, turning a key, using a mouse, or carrying groceries may all trigger the same familiar ache. For people considering treating tennis elbow with acupuncture, the goal is rarely just to feel better for an hour. It is to move with more confidence and return to daily life without constantly guarding the arm.

Tennis elbow, also called lateral epicondylalgia or lateral epicondylitis, is not limited to tennis players. It commonly affects people whose work, hobbies, caregiving, or exercise involve repeated gripping, lifting, wrist movement, or forearm rotation. It can also develop gradually, with no single moment of injury.

Acupuncture can be a supportive option for some people with persistent elbow pain, particularly when it is part of a thoughtful plan that respects the source of the strain, the condition of the surrounding tissues, and the person’s overall health. The right approach is individual. What helps a recreational golfer may look different from the care needed by a hairstylist, tradesperson, office worker, or older adult managing long-standing stiffness.

What tennis elbow actually involves

Despite the name, tennis elbow does not always mean there is active inflammation in the tendon. In many ongoing cases, the extensor tendons that attach near the outer elbow have become irritated, overloaded, or slower to recover. These tendons help control the wrist and fingers, so pain may appear when gripping, pouring, opening jars, lifting with the palm down, or extending the wrist.

Pain can remain local to the outside of the elbow, but some people also notice tightness through the forearm, sensitivity near the wrist, reduced grip strength, or compensating discomfort in the shoulder and neck. This is one reason a careful assessment matters. Elbow pain is not always tennis elbow. Nerve irritation, joint problems, neck-related pain, arthritis, or a more significant injury can sometimes create similar symptoms.

A practitioner-led assessment considers where the pain starts, what movements aggravate it, how long it has been present, previous injuries, work demands, sleep, stress, and what has or has not helped before. For Traditional Chinese Medicine, treatment also considers the person’s constitution and broader pattern of tension, circulation, recovery, and pain sensitivity.

Treating tennis elbow with acupuncture: what to expect

Acupuncture treatment uses very fine, sterile, single-use disposable needles placed at selected points. Treatment may include points around the elbow and forearm, as well as points farther from the painful area that are chosen to support the related channels, muscle balance, and nervous system response.

The experience is generally gentle. Some people notice a brief pinch at insertion, followed by heaviness, warmth, tingling, or a dull spreading sensation. Others feel deeply relaxed. Needles are not placed directly into a painful tendon simply because it hurts there. Point selection should be based on the assessment and adjusted as the condition changes.

For tennis elbow, acupuncture may be used to help reduce pain sensitivity, encourage local circulation, relax overworked muscle tissue, and make rehabilitation movements more tolerable. In TCM terms, pain is often associated with obstruction or stagnation in the channels. The treatment aim is to encourage smoother flow while addressing the patterns that may be contributing to ongoing tension or poor recovery.

Research on acupuncture for tennis elbow has shown potential for short-term pain relief and functional improvement, but results vary and study quality is not uniform. It is reasonable to view acupuncture as a complementary treatment, not a guaranteed cure. The most meaningful measure is whether you are gradually able to do more with less pain and less compensation.

Why the whole arm matters

The elbow is often the point where overload becomes obvious, not necessarily the only area involved. Tight forearm muscles may be doing too much work. The shoulder blade may not be supporting arm movement efficiently. A stiff neck, repetitive workstation posture, reduced sleep, or a recent increase in activity can all affect recovery.

For this reason, treatment may include nearby trigger-point work, heat therapy, or cupping when appropriate. These modalities are not necessary for everyone, and they should never replace clear communication about comfort, medical history, and skin sensitivity. A treatment plan should feel collaborative, not standardized.

Acupuncture works best alongside practical changes

No treatment can fully offset the activity that keeps overloading the tendon. That does not mean you need to stop using your arm completely. Complete rest for too long may leave the area weaker and more sensitive when you return to activity. Usually, the better path is temporary load management followed by a gradual return to strengthening.

A useful recovery plan often includes modifying the movements that provoke sharp pain, changing grip or tool position where possible, taking short breaks from repetitive tasks, and using a paced strengthening program recommended by a qualified health professional. Gentle wrist and forearm exercises can be helpful, but timing matters. Exercises that are appropriate once irritability settles may be too much during a painful flare.

Consider the difference between discomfort and a warning sign. Mild, manageable soreness that settles may be part of rebuilding capacity. Sharp pain, rapidly worsening symptoms, numbness, marked weakness, swelling after an injury, or pain that repeatedly lingers for days after activity deserves reassessment. Progress is not always perfectly linear, especially when work and family responsibilities make rest difficult.

How many acupuncture visits might be needed?

There is no honest one-size-fits-all answer. A recent, mild case may respond more quickly than pain that has been present for many months or years. Recovery can also take longer when you cannot modify repetitive work, when the arm is being overloaded in several ways, or when sleep and stress are affecting pain recovery.

Some people notice a change in pain or ease of movement after the first few visits. Others need a series of treatments before the improvement is clear. Rather than promising a fixed number of sessions, a responsible plan includes regular reassessment. Are daily tasks easier? Is grip improving? Does the elbow recover faster after activity? Is pain becoming less frequent or less intense?

If progress has stalled, the plan should be adjusted. This may mean changing treatment frequency, revisiting activity demands, adding or updating rehabilitation, or recommending assessment from another regulated health professional. Good care leaves room for referral and collaboration.

Safety and when to seek medical assessment first

Acupuncture is generally well tolerated when provided by a trained, regulated practitioner using safe needling practices. Let your practitioner know about blood-thinning medication, bleeding disorders, pregnancy, immune concerns, recent surgery, skin infection, allergies, significant health changes, and any prior reaction to needles.

Seek timely medical attention if elbow pain follows a fall or direct injury, the joint looks deformed, you cannot move the arm normally, you develop fever or redness with swelling, or you experience persistent numbness, sudden weakness, or loss of hand function. These symptoms may point to something other than a routine overuse condition.

At Cindy TCM Acupuncture-Orillia, care begins with listening closely to how pain affects your work, sleep, mobility, and confidence. Zhen Li, R.Ac, R.TCM, provides individualized acupuncture using single-use disposable needles, with treatment options selected according to your needs and comfort. If you are planning to use extended health benefits, it is wise to verify your insurer’s recognition of the practitioner’s professional designations before submitting a claim.

A gentler path back to using your arm

Tennis elbow can be frustrating because the movements that hurt are often the ones you cannot simply avoid. Still, a painful elbow does not have to dictate every part of your day. With careful assessment, appropriate load changes, and consistent treatment that supports both pain relief and recovery, many people find a more manageable path forward.

The next useful step is not to push through every painful task or wait until the problem becomes unbearable. It is to give the elbow informed, patient attention and create a plan that fits the life you actually need to live.

Cindy is great. Very pleasant and welcoming. I can finally get relief from my trigger points with her combination of acupuncture and cupping!
Response from the owner:Thanks for your sharing. I'm thrilled for you! After just two visits, you've achieved very good results. These outcomes are partly due to my experience with many similar cases and partly because of your solid foundation or constitution. Most of the time, my new clients ask me how many visits they will need. I always tell them that it depends not only on my skills but also on their constitution.

I have been utilizing TCM for over 40 years in Toronto. I moved to Orillia in Dec 2022 and became very ill with COVID in July 2023. While in very rough shape, I found Cindy and she helped me heal very quickly! Since then I see her weekly to improve my immune system, lung, kidney, and liver functions. I feel better than I have in a long time since my previous practitioner retired. She is very well trained ( in China), knowledgeable, compassionate, works gently with her client, Is flexible with scheduling appointments, and prices are very reasonable, including giving a discount to seniors. I am so happy to have her available in Orillia and would refer anyone to her. She always works with her best efforts!! Thank you for helping me on many occasions.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for your heartfelt review. It means the world to me that I could assist you in your recovery and continue to support your health and well-being. I'm delighted to hear that you are feeling better and that my treatments have had a positive impact on your life. Your kind words about my training, knowledge, and approach to care are deeply appreciated. I am committed to providing the best possible care for all my clients, and I'm glad that my efforts have made a difference for you. COVID has affected many people's health, presenting complications that are unprecedented. This makes finding solutions challenging. Thankfully, with over 5000 years of documented history, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture offer a wealth of experience to draw from. By analyzing the body as an organic whole, TCM and acupuncture seek to balance and optimize overall health. Regular maintenance, such as weekly or monthly sessions, is a great way to maintain better health. I also appreciate your understanding of my accent. English is not my mother tongue, and I strive to improve my communication skills. Thank you for your patience and forgiveness. Thank you for trusting me with your health and for referring others to my practice. It is a privilege to be part of the Orillia community and to serve clients like you.

My father had stroke 5 years ago, not able to walk, need to move with a walker, after visit this clinic for regular treatment for 3 months, he can walk now.
Response from the owner:Thanks for your sharing. The Role of Acupuncture in Stroke Recovery: Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years as a key component of traditional Chinese medicine. Its underlying principle is based on the concept of Qi (pronounced “chee”), the vital energy that flows through pathways known as meridians in the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, illness and pain occur when Qi becomes blocked or imbalanced. By inserting needles at specific acupoints along these meridians, acupuncture aims to restore the smooth flow of Qi, promoting healing and alleviating symptoms. In the context of stroke recovery, acupuncture offers several potential benefits: Pain Management: Many stroke survivors experience chronic pain, particularly due to muscle spasticity or nerve damage. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce pain by stimulating the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals, and modulating pain perception pathways in the brain. Improved Motor Function: Acupuncture may help enhance motor recovery by promoting neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections. By targeting specific acupoints related to motor function, acupuncture therapy can potentially facilitate the rehabilitation process and restore movement in affected limbs. Enhanced Blood Circulation: Proper blood circulation is crucial for supplying oxygen and nutrients to the brain, aiding in its repair and regeneration after a stroke. Acupuncture has been found to enhance blood flow by dilating blood vessels and improving microcirculation, thereby supporting the healing process and reducing the risk of secondary complications. Stress Reduction and Mental Well-being: Stroke recovery can be emotionally taxing, leading to anxiety, depression, and other psychological issues. Acupuncture sessions promote relaxation and stress reduction by triggering the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which contribute to improved mood and overall well-being. Adjunctive Therapy: Acupuncture is often used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional rehabilitation interventions. Integrating acupuncture into a comprehensive stroke rehabilitation program can provide additional support and enhance the effectiveness of other treatments. Research Evidence and Clinical Studies: While the use of acupuncture in stroke rehabilitation is promising, more research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms and efficacy. Several clinical studies have investigated the effects of acupuncture on various aspects of stroke recovery, including motor function, cognitive function, and quality of life. While some studies have reported positive outcomes, others have yielded inconclusive results, highlighting the need for further randomized controlled trials and standardized protocols. Conclusion: Acupuncture holds considerable potential as a complementary therapy for stroke recovery, offering benefits in pain management, motor function improvement, stress reduction, and overall well-being. However, its integration into mainstream rehabilitation practices requires more robust scientific evidence and standardized guidelines. As research in this field continues to evolve, acupuncture may emerge as a valuable adjunctive treatment option, providing hope and healing for stroke survivors striving to regain independence and quality of life. Incorporating the ancient wisdom of acupuncture into modern stroke rehabilitation protocols represents a harmonious fusion of Eastern and Western healing philosophies, paving the way for holistic approaches to recovery and wellness.

Cindy is Great, knowledgeable, Gentle and polite. I have been seeing her for a couple for frozen hip and shoulder and have enjoyed some increased movement.
Response from the owner:Thanks for your sharing. Frozen shoulder, medically known as adhesive capsulitis, is a debilitating condition characterized by stiffness, pain, and limited range of motion in the shoulder joint. Conventional treatments often involve pain management and physical therapy, but there's a growing interest in alternative therapies like acupuncture. Let's delve deeper into how acupuncture can help unlock frozen shoulders and restore mobility and comfort to sufferers. Understanding Frozen Shoulder: Before exploring acupuncture's role in treating frozen shoulder, it's crucial to understand the condition itself. Frozen shoulder occurs when the connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint becomes thickened and inflamed, leading to stiffness and restricted movement. This can be caused by various factors such as injury, overuse, or underlying medical conditions like diabetes or thyroid disorders. Regardless of the cause, frozen shoulder can significantly impact a person's quality of life, making even simple tasks like getting dressed or reaching for objects painful and challenging. The Role of Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow, known as Qi. According to TCM principles, the body's energy meridians can become blocked or imbalanced, leading to pain and illness. Acupuncture aims to restore balance and promote healing by unblocking these pathways. When it comes to frozen shoulder, acupuncture can target specific acupoints associated with the shoulder and surrounding areas. By inserting needles into these points, acupuncture practitioners aim to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and improve blood circulation to the affected area. Additionally, acupuncture may help release tension in the muscles and promote relaxation, which can further enhance mobility and comfort in the shoulder joint.
Came in with some excruciating pain at the base of my neck and within 3 sessions Cindy had me all sorted! Definitely recommend.
Response from the owner:Thanks for your sharing. Neck and shoulder pain can be caused by various factors, and it's important to note that multiple factors may contribute to the discomfort. Here are some common reasons for neck and shoulder pain: Muscle Strain: Overuse or poor posture can lead to muscle strain in the neck and shoulders. This can be caused by activities such as prolonged sitting at a desk, carrying heavy bags, or sleeping in an awkward position. Poor Ergonomics: Incorrect ergonomics at work or while using electronic devices can contribute to neck and shoulder pain. This includes an improperly positioned computer monitor, chair, or keyboard. Trauma or Injury: Accidents, falls, or sudden impacts can cause injuries to the neck and shoulder region, leading to pain. Herniated Discs: The discs between the vertebrae in the spine can herniate or bulge, putting pressure on nerves and causing pain that may radiate into the shoulders and neck. Arthritis: Conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can affect the joints in the neck and shoulders, leading to pain and stiffness. Stress and Tension: Emotional stress can contribute to muscle tension, particularly in the neck and shoulders. Prolonged tension may result in pain. Poor Sleeping Position: Sleeping in an uncomfortable or awkward position can strain the neck and shoulders, leading to pain. Referred Pain: Pain originating from other areas of the body, such as the spine or internal organs, can be felt in the neck and shoulders. Nerve Compression: Conditions like cervical radiculopathy, where nerves in the neck are compressed or irritated, can cause pain that may extend into the shoulders. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as fibromyalgia or myofascial pain syndrome, can cause widespread pain, including the neck and shoulders. We restored blood circulation then your will feel better.

I've been quite ill for almost 5 years. Not fully diagnosed yet, but includes Fibromyalgia and Myalgic encephalomyelitis/CFS. I have tried numerous treatments including acupuncture. None of them helped at all. I have only been going to Cindy for a few weeks so far but I have seen a noticeable improvement in both my pain and energy. Even if I have no further improvements I would certainly call her treatments a success. Highly Recommended!
Response from the owner:Thanks for taking your time to share your experience. About Fibromyalgia and Myalgic encephalomyelitis/CFS, in the view of Traditional Chinese Medicine, we found a few major patterns about this disorder, but not limited to these patterns: a) Spleen deficiency. b) And deficiency of the Kidney, because of the insidious onset, back and forth pain and soreness, tired feeling, and weakness of loins and knees. Overstrain and stress consume essence and Qi, thus it is worse. Kidney deficiency has signs of deep and weak pulse, especially the position close to the heart. c) And Qi deficiency. d) And invasion by pathogenic cold and damp, because of exposure to cold and damp, and is worse on rainy days, feeling heavies and stiffness, limitation of extension and flexion of some parts of the body, and feeling of cold, and pain any part of the body. This pattern has signs of soft pulse or teeth marks on the tongue. That is why I would check your pulse and tongue and ask you a lot to questions, once we find the right pattern, then we can find the solution.
